Muscle Pain & Myofascial Pain Syndrome

Advanced diagnosis and treatment for Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS), trigger point pain, and chronic neck & upper back muscle pain at Noida Pain Management Clinic.

A lot of patients having pain in their Neck & Upper back muscles actually have an underlying muscle injury which causes severe pain on pressing the affected muscle. This is what is called as Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS). So many times, it is diagnosed as Cervical pain/Fibromyalgia and even sometimes as if the patient has some psychogenic issues.

These patients do have Trigger Points which are points of tight muscle fibres in muscles. These are especially common in people who are overusing their muscles with poor posture (IT people, Bank officials, teachers etc.). Also people having chronic stress tend to develop these trigger points.

Symptoms of Myofascial Pain Syndrome –
Most commonly patients suffering from MPS have the following symptoms:

Dull pain which is not very severe but bothers patients a lot. They keep moving their neck and keep stretching.
Burning sensation with heaviness in back/neck muscles.
Pain that doesn't go away or gets worse despite exercises and physiotherapy.
Tender points in muscles.
Trouble sleeping due to pain.
A general feeling of being not well with a lot of tiredness.

Myofascial Pain Syndrome is not Fibromyalgia. We do see a lot of patients being put on many medications for fibromyalgia when all they have is a simple MPS of a few muscle groups — unlike fibromyalgia which is much more widespread. It is vital to diagnose this correctly as treatment for both is entirely different.

Treatment of Myofascial Pain Syndrome at Noida Pain Management Clinic –
Myofascial pain syndrome treatment must be individualized for each patient. We use treatment tailored to each patient as they have different duration of symptoms with differing expectations.

The usual treatment includes:

Medications – Nerve medications, NSAIDs, and sometimes a short course of anti-anxiety medications.
Physical Therapy – Stretching or some form of light exercises tailored to the patient's condition.
Trigger Point Injections – Extremely effective in cases where medicines have not worked. This releases tender spots in muscles and fascia leading to dramatic improvement.
